The map is the live pulse of Etsy. Open it and you watch marketplace activity stream onto a globe in near real time, with a running feed of individual events underneath. Under the hood it is a single typed event stream, fanned in from a few sources and deliberately smoothed before it reaches your screen. Here is how it works and what everything on the page means.
Where the data comes from
We keep a very large index of Etsy listings current through a change capture chain, so edits on Etsy reach us within minutes rather than on a slow daily crawl. The stream reads from that index using a forward cursor on each listing’s last updated time. It only ever moves ahead, and it never re scans the world. That is what lets the feed run continuously without hammering the same data twice.
The signal types
The feed carries individual Etsy signals: new listings, favorites, views, updates, sales, and reviews. The colored chips let you filter by type. Four of these come straight from watching listings change. A listing that just appeared is a new event. A listing whose state flips to sold out or expired becomes a sold or expired event. When a listing reappears with a higher favorite or view count than we last saw, the difference becomes a favorite or view event. Reviews arrive from a separate near real time feed, since a review is its own kind of record.
What the stream table shows
Each row in the feed is one real event, with these columns: Time, the moment it happened on our playback clock. Country, where the shop is based. Signal, the event type. Category, the product category. Shop, the Etsy shop name. Title, the listing. Price, the listing price. Fav and Views, the listing’s favorite and view counts. State, whether the listing is active, sold or expired. Click anything to open it on Etsy.
The counters and panels
A few readouts sit around the globe, each with an info note in the app:
- Events per second. The rate of signals arriving on the live stream right now, listings, favorites, views and reviews combined. The feed runs about five minutes behind real time.
- Stream speed. The flow control. Real time matches the Etsy stream, the 30, 60 and 90 per minute settings slow it to a readable pace, and Stop freezes the feed, globe and counters together.
- Top markets. The top countries ranked by the selected metric, Activity, New, or Reviews, over roughly the last sixty seconds. Switch the metric and the globe recolors to match.
- Category filter. Narrows the live stream to one product category. Categories are ranked by recent activity across all Etsy listings.
Why it feels smooth
Raw data does not arrive evenly. It comes in bursts, then goes quiet. So the stream runs about five minutes behind real time on purpose, which keeps a buffer of data ahead of what you see. Events are released at a steady pace, and every one is stamped by a single playback clock, so the Time column ticks forward cleanly instead of lurching when a burst lands. Favorites and views get an extra boost from a worker that polls Etsy’s batch endpoint every few minutes for the listings drawing the most attention, so popular products show movement even between updates. Each event is placed on the globe by the seller’s country, and a handful of restricted countries are filtered out.
What you are really seeing
This is genuine activity, not a simulation. In production the map shows real data only. If the stream ever drops it reconnects rather than inventing anything. Reports tell you what already won. The map tells you where attention is moving right now, across the whole marketplace. When a category lights up here, open its Best Sellers report to see the exact products behind the movement.
